Germany is the fourth-largest paper producer in the world, alongside China, the USA, and Japan (approximately 22.1 million tons in 2019).* Per capita paper consumption in Germany is 227 kilograms (2019) – higher than in almost any other country in the world.
Fortunately, there are already alternatives available today that can mitigate the negative impact on the environment. In addition to recycled paper, there's a new trend: sustainable packaging with tea towels , completely waste-free. This trend originates from Japan and is called Furoshiki.
THE PACKAGING
You need:
- A tea towel
- The gift
- Possibly decoration
And here's how it works:
Step 1: Place the cloth on a table and your gift in the bottom left corner.

Step 2: Fold the bottom left corner so that the gift is 80% wrapped diagonally.

Step 3: Fold the top right corner to the bottom left.
